Tax Culture as the Basis of Financial Awareness: A Motivational Meeting of the Department of Accounting and Auditing with Tax Specialists
On March 19, 2025, the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education hosted an informative and insightful meeting between representatives of the tax service and students from various educational programs. The event was attended by undergraduate students from the “Accounting and Taxation” and “Financial Security” programs, master’s students from the “International Accounting and Taxation” program, as well as students of the pre-university education program in “Accounting and Taxation” from the Professional College.
The primary goal of the meeting was not only to familiarize young people with the functioning of the tax system but also to highlight the crucial role of taxpayers in the country’s development.
Students listened with great interest to the honorary guest, Marta Voloshchuk, an experienced tax specialist who had led the regional tax service for many years. She is currently an associate professor at Uzhhorod National University and the head of the Territorial Branch Council of the All-Ukrainian Public Organization “Association of Taxpayers of Ukraine” in the Transcarpathian region. Her speech was a fascinating historical overview of Ukraine’s tax system, tracing its development from the early days of independence to the present challenges.
Ms. Marta Voloshchuk also presented scientific publications prepared under her leadership —”The Formation and Development of Ukraine’s Tax System” and “Tax Law of EU Countries.” According to her, these books can serve as a solid foundation for a deeper understanding of tax processes both in Ukraine and internationally.
Petro Dudash, the head of the Berehove State Tax Inspectorate, explained the practical aspects of tax administration. He provided detailed insights into how tax authorities operate in the region, how taxpayers are registered, and how tax calculation and payment compliance is monitored. The speaker placed special emphasis on innovations in the tax sector, particularly electronic services that significantly simplify interactions between citizens and tax authorities. Among them:
- The “Taxpayer’s Electronic Cabinet”
- The “My Taxes” mobile application
- Software-based cash registers
- Online reference and information resources
As Mr. Dudash noted, these tools not only minimize human error but also create a more transparent, convenient, and accessible tax system tailored to the needs of citizens.
At the end of the meeting, students were invited to participate in the nationwide “Tax Professional of the Future” competition—an initiative of the State Tax University aimed at fostering creativity and intellectual potential among young people, promoting tax awareness, and encouraging interest in careers in finance and economics.
The event demonstrated that fostering tax culture should begin during student years. After all, the younger generation—future financiers, accountants, and managers—will be responsible for building Ukraine’s economic stability and financial independence.
We sincerely thank the organizers and speakers for an engaging and inspiring meeting! We look forward to further fruitful cooperation and new educational initiatives!
