Poetry in the square! – Six hundred students recite simultaneously at Rákóczi College

The Pro Cultura Subcarpathica (PCS) civil organization organized its “Poetry in the Square” flash mob for the eighth time to mark Poetry Day. The event took place on April 11 at the Rákóczi College.

At the NGO’s National Poetry Day poetry recitation, a chosen poem by a jubilant poet of the given year is usually recited together in the main square of Beregszász. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, and in 2022 due to the war in Ukraine. As a result of the current state of war, László Nagy’s poem “Adjon az Isten” was recited in the atrium of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education.

At the beginning of the event, Gergely Marcsák, a Transcarpathian poet, performed musical adaptations of poems.

Following this, the attendees were greeted by Andrea Fülöp, the Consul of the Consulate of Hungary in Beregszász, who emphasized that for 61 years now, every year on April 11, the birthday of József Attila, we celebrate Hungarian Poetry Day and honor Hungarian poetry.

“Today something special is happening with us, not only because April 11 is Hungarian Poetry Day, but also because the poem steps out of the library, the classroom, the shelves, and arrives among us,”

emphasized János Csizmár, the Vice Rector of the Rákóczi College.

After the greetings came the eagerly awaited moment of reciting poems together. The chosen poem was recited by Ibolya Orosz, an actress from the Transcarpathian Regional Hungarian Drama Theatre and then recited together by young and old.

After the joint recitation, Gergely Marcsák performed László Nagy’s poem Adjon az Isten in a musical form.

Next, the enthusiastic students had the opportunity to recite their favorite poems on stage, followed by a performance from the band composed of faculty members and students from the Department of Philology at the Rákóczi College, who elevated the atmosphere further with their musical renditions of poems.

Our institution served as the venue for the Pro Cultura Subcarpathica’s event for the third occasion.

As in previous years, the day was rounded off by everyone having the opportunity to sign the portrait of László Nagy set up at the venue.

The programme was supported by the Government of Hungary, the State Secretariat for National Policy of the Prime Minister’s Office with the involvement of Bethlen Gábor Fund Management Ltd.
