“Learning by Working – Working by Learning”: business workshop at the Rákóczi Ferenc II Transcarpathian Hungarian College

On 29 May 2025, a business workshop entitled “Learning by Working – Working by Learning” was held at the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College. The event was organised by the Department of Accounting and Auditing as part of the MTA KOMP project.

The aim of the programme was to provide students of the “Accounting and Taxation” (Bachelor’s and Master’s level) and “Finance, Banking, Insurance and Stock Exchange” (Bachelor’s level) study programmes with a comprehensive overview of employment opportunities in the business sector and to familiarise them with best international practices. At the same time, the event represented an important step in the development of training programmes, as it created a platform for dialogue between the business sector and academia.

The event was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Róbert Bacsó, Head of the Department of Accounting and Auditing, who welcomed the participants on behalf of the host institution, the Rákóczi College. In his welcome speech, he highlighted the key role of practical knowledge in modern higher education. He was followed by Dr. habil. Veronika Fenyves, Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Debrecen, who emphasised the success of cooperation between Hungarian higher education institutions and the business sector.

The roundtable discussion was moderated by Gábor Pataki, Assistant Professor at the Department of Accounting and Auditing, who engaged the invited experts in a conversation on topics of particular importance to students’ future employability.

In her presentation, Dr. habil. Veronika Fenyves introduced the dual education system operating at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Debrecen and shared experiences regarding successful collaboration with businesses, focusing on the integration of theoretical and practical training.

Dr. Attila Rózsa (Associate Professor) and Dr. Alexandra Szekeres (Assistant Lecturer), both lecturers at the Institute of Accounting and Finance of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Debrecen, presented examples of practice-oriented teaching of accounting subjects.

Dr. Gabriella Loszkorih and Dr. Edina Sebestyén, lecturers at the Rákóczi College, examined the opportunities for cooperation between higher education and the business sector from a regional perspective, taking into account the specificities of the Transcarpathian labour market.

János Sipos, Director of the John Gáspár Brewery in Berehove, shared his personal entrepreneurial experience and illustrated the challenges of starting a business in Transcarpathia, underlining the essential role of active cooperation between higher education institutions and the real economy.

At the end of the programme, students had the opportunity to engage in informal discussions with the lecturers and business representatives, ask questions, share experiences and receive feedback on professional challenges.

The event successfully achieved its goals: it highlighted the importance of practical, experience-based training and provided a platform for strengthening cooperation between higher economic education and the business world.
