Poetry in the square! – another joint poetry recitation in Beregszász

This year, the Pro Cultura Subcarpathica (PCS) NGO organised for the tenth time its Poetry in the square flash mob poetry festival in celebration of Poetry Day. The event took place on 11 April at the Rákóczi College.

At the NGO’s National Poetry Day poetry recitation, a chosen poem by a jubilant poet of the given year is usually recited together in the main square of Beregszász. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, and in 2022 due to the war in Ukraine. As a result of the current state of war, Mihály Váci’s poem “Még nem elég” was recited in the atrium of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education.

Miklós Jusztin, the Consul of the Consulate of Hungary in Beregszász, welcomed the audience.

“Today we celebrate the magic of words, we commemorate those who painted the world with their pens and gave us their thoughts, feelings and dreams. Poetry is a bridge that connects the past with our present and lights the way to the future,”

he said.

Ildikó Orosz, president of the Rákóczi College and PCS, expressed her joy that this year, 20 schools from Transcarpathia with nearly five hundred students participated in the event.

“We Hungarians love poetry. Our poems contain the soul, philosophy, thinking and attitude of the Hungarian people, and our poems are interesting and diverse thanks to our special language. Only those who were born into this or have deeply learned our language can understand its nuances,”

emphasized the president.

Then came the eagerly awaited moment of reciting poems together. The chosen poem was recited by Viktória Orbán, a Pro Cultura Subcarpathica staff member and a student of the Philology Department of the Rákóczi College, and then recited together by young and old.

The joint recitation was followed by a cheerful concert where Hungarian musician Ádám Beretka performed poems set to music. Then thanks to him we got to know the poems of Miklós Radnóti, Sándor Petőfi and Tamás Cseh even better, and he also surprised the audience with his own compositions. The concert was rewarded with applause from the audience.
