Poem in the square! – joint poetry recitation in Beregszász

After three years of online poetry recitation, Pro Cultura Subcarpathica invited again to recite together.

At the NGO’s National Poetry Day poetry recitation, a chosen poem by the jubilant poet of the given year is usually recited together in the main square of Beregszász. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, and in 2022 due to the war in Ukraine. As a result of the current state of war, Sándor Petőfi’s poem “Nem megyek én innen sehova” was recited in the atrium of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College.

At the beginning of the event, Marianna Csákány, a folk singing teacher at the Tulipán Tanoda, performed a poem by Sándor Petőfi entitled “Elvándorol a madár“.

Marianna Pallagi, director of PCS, welcomed the audience. She pointed out that the last time when a poetry recitation with personal presence was held in the main square of Beregszász was in 2019. After that, the event was forced to go online due to the coronavirus and then the outbreak of the war, but today, once again, young and old can recite together.

“In the 1990s, with the Bátyú and Bereg Poetry Days, a poetry recitation competition was launched which was taken up by Pro Cultura Subcarpathica and extended to the whole of Transcarpathia, so that now the great works of Hungarian literature can be heard not only in schools but also in the square,”

said Ildikó Orosz, President of the Rákóczi College and PCS.

After the welcome speech, Marianna Csákány performed a poem by Sándor Petőfi entitled “Nem megyek én innen sehova“.

Then the long-awaited moment, the joint poetry recitation came. The chosen poem was performed by Dóra Mónus, teacher of the Rákóczi College’s Philology Department, and then recited together by children and adults. The poem recitation was followed by joint singing, with Marianna Csákány and the children also performing a musical version of the poem.

Finally, as in previous years, everyone could sign the Petőfi portrait set up on the spot.
